Beware of fraud/identity theft involving unemployment compensation. Here are two examples:
- Unemployment checks received in the mail that were not applied for, or
- Receiving 1099Gs reporting taxable income attributable to unemployment benefits not applied for.
We recommend that if this happens to you: check your state unemployment website for steps to take to report this, which will likely require you to report the fraud and attempt to get revised 1099Gs, check to see if there is any suspicious activity on credit reports, and possibly check in with your local law enforcement.
For more information, if this occurs in PA, check out https://www.uc.pa.gov/Pages/Report-Fraud-Here.aspx.
